Alone I have prepared simpler flash cards for Reian, this time I am going to test his phonics, and teach him how to pronounce the alphabets if he does not know how to. I hope that he will be able to read out the sounds of the alphabets at least, by the end of this weeks session. As I carried out my plans, I was happy that I was able to engage Reian into reading out the alphabets, and he seemed very happy whilst singing the alphabet song that he seemed to know by heart. When I tested him on the pronunciations of the alphabets, he seemed okay. Therefore, I decided to go a step further and try to put letters together, and get him to read. I did not put my hopes up high, but was thankful to see that he was able to pronounce some words that I had put together using the letters. When I congratulated him, he seemed more enthusiastic to try to do better. I am elated at my first success with Reian! Something that I did finally worked out. I can see that Reian is improving, and that gives me a driving force. I think I can relate this to the enthusiastic feeling that Reian had when he was successful in reading out the words. Perhaps this is the way I should approach teaching Reian, it seems to be a good motivator for him. I plan to continue this plan, progressing in difficulty of the words. Reian’s vocabulary seems great, however he is unable to read out the words it. I shall work on this. Hopefully by the end of the next session he will be able to read most simple words by combining the sounds of the letters.

Alone Since from the last session, Reian seems to be comfortable with alphabets, I will probably revise the alphabets with him this session. I am also planning to form short 2 letter words and get him to try to read them.
I got Reian to revise his alphabets with me, and he seemed to be very confident in his pronunciation of the alphabets now! When I formed certain short words with the alphabets, he was able to read a few of them! Thus I felt quite happy! After that, I decided to pick a book and read it to him. He seemed to have developed an interest in reading, as when I was reading a book to him, he was very engaged, and seemed very interested. And I am relieved that he is developing a passion for reading, which is what we are aiming for!
I learnt that if you are willing to put in effort to prepare your lesson beforehand, it will pay off. I hope I will continue to work hard to prepare for the sessions, so that they may be more fruitful in the future.

Alone I will revise with Reian certain simple words that we went through last week. I am also planning to get him to read a book to me. Today, things didn’t go as well as I planned. When going through the simple words we went through last week, Reian seemed very restless, I think that it may have been because he had been at the library before I came, as his mother came 1 hour early to read with her kids. So, I decided that it was too taxing to get Reian to continue with the flashcards. I got him to read a book to me. He was really restless. He didn’t read most of the words and instead inferred the words from the pictures.
I wasn’t able to accomplish much with Reian today. He was too tired and restless. I learnt that sometimes, things just don’t go according to plan, and even though you put in effort, sometimes instead of improving the children seem to deprove or not have benefited. It is sometimes discouraging, but I don’t blame the children, I think it must be quite taxing on them as well. I will try to carry out this sessions plan next week.

Alone I will revise with Reian certain simple words that we went through last week. I am also planning to get him to read a book to me. I hope that this week will be more successful than last week! I left him in the room and asked him to read a book, but while I was choosing the books, he became restless and started running around. Eventually, I managed to sit him down. But by that time, he was already quite tired, and he only managed to read through half the book after I had guided him.
I am quite disappointed with myself today. I learnt that I shouldn’t leave Reian without supervision and that I give him something to put his hands on. I hope that in the next session, I will be more responsible and supervise Reian more tightly. I relate this incident to situations in school when teacher’s leave the class for awhile, we often start wreaking havoc, and I now understand how frustrating it can be at times.

During the session, Reian didn’t want to listen to me, and just wanted to read his own book, therefore I got slightly frustrated and discouraged. But after persevering, I managed to get him to do some flashcards with me, although he wasn’t totally concentrated, but I am glad that at least I managed to salvage the situation slightly. Sometimes Reian just doesn’t listen to me or do what I ask him to. And it can be frustrating. After thinking about it, I reflected upon myself. I realised that it is really discouraging and frustrating for others when they are trying hard to help you improve, and yet you don’t want to accept their help. I think I should do my duty to put in effort to do my best in the future, so as to encourage him/her.

Today, I had to take both Reian and Adib, and it was a real handful, I was struggling to entertain both of them throughout the session, and couldn’t accomplish much. I learnt that I shouldn’t take on more than I can handle.

Alone I will revise with Reian certain simple words that we went through 2 weeks ago. I am also planning to get him to read a book to me. I am glad that I was stop Reian and his brother from continuing their fight during today’s session.
I learnt that sometimes two people can fight over small misunderstandings or minor things, and that these fights often burst into something much bigger than it should be. I learnt that, as long as you give the parties enough time to cool down and relax, most issues can be resolved. For me, I think that when I get into tiffs, I should give myself or the opposite party some time to cool down! Same goes for mediating an argument between 2 people. I should give them time to relax.
